Health Event

Hello and Welcome to the second Health Awareness Event for the East of the City.

Heaton Baptist Church, Tuesday 26th September from 3.00-6.00pm.

Following the enthusiastic feedback from our first event earlier this year, we have decided to take on board the suggestions you made and have organised another event. This will take the form of a keynote presentation by a Newcastle Hospital Dietitian, the most visited stall at the last event, followed by break-out sessions with a wide variety of other professionals.

You can book a maximum of 4 sessions, each lasting 20 minutes, and times for these will be allocated to you. If you have a free session there will be stalls for you to look round including having your blood pressure, glucose levels, weight, height and BMI checked as well as accessing the Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool, for those not diagnosed as diabetic.

Booking is essential. To reserve your place, and book your breakout sessions, please text 07736973730 with your name and GP surgery and the 4 (maximum) letters corresponding to the breakout session you wish to attend ie if you want to see Healthwise, Pain Management and Alcohol Reduction, text ACD and your name and GP surgery to 07736973730.

Siobhan will cover some basic healthy eating advice, focusing on Carbohydrates. What is the relationship between carbs and blood glucose levels. This is important to all of us not just those with diabetes.

What are the different types of carbs and their impact on us.

Are all carbs bad for us? Find out about healthy carbs and calorie swaps.

What if you are on medication? How can it be affected by food and activity.

Siobhan and her team will be available in your free sessions for questions and further information.

Healthwise is a healthy lifestyle programme, commissioned by the Newcastle City council, designed to support patients to lose weight, get active and build confidence.

This service offers both Physical Activity on Referral, Weight Management pathways for participants and has been designed to tackle ill-health related to obesity and physical inactivity.

B) RETINOPATHY (suitable primarily for diabetics)

We are the North of Tyne and Gateshead Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, we provide screening to detect diabetic eye disease, also known as Retinopathy. In our session, you will learn more about our service and its importance, the changes we look for behind your eyes, as well as some information on how to keep your eyes healthy.

Pain and fatigue are common symptoms of many long-term and chronic conditions. Together we can find ways to take back some control and live better lives.

The alcohol education session will provide information on calculating units, the calories in alcohol and some helpful tips on cutting down your drinking. There will also be the opportunity to discuss any concerns with the team and sign posting will be available for local services.

We all experience times when we feel like we can’t cope, sometimes this can start to affect our everyday lives and prevent us from doing the things we normally do. Following an introduction to the service and what we offer, we will discuss what you think about therapy, what it involves, resources you can access that might help and how to self-refer into the service.
